Special session for social enterprise:

legal considerations for charities

June 10th, 2-4pm, Abbotsford BC

One of the paralyzing factors for registered charities undertaking social enterprise development is the threat to their charitable status for operating what is referred to by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as ‘unrelated business’.

We are fortunate to have Richard Bridge, a dedicated and knowledgeable charities lawyer, presenting a special two-hour session focusing on legal considerations for organizations considering or currently operating social enterprises.

Topics include CRA administrative policies on charities and business activities, legal structures for social enterprise, and tips for avoiding legal challenges. We’ll also share some news on the development of a completely separate legal structure for social enterprise in Canada.

Seating is limited for this Abbotsford session. Kindly contact Suzanne at 604.864.5770 ext304 to register. Cost is $40, payable in advance by credit card, and includes light refreshments. This one-time only workshop will be presented at the Fraser Valley Centre for Social Enterprise location, 100 – 32383 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford, BC.

Richard Bridge, formerly from Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, is now based in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, where he continues to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor across Canada. His legal practice involves three fields: 1) charity law 2) non-profit organizations, and 3) cooperatives. Richard has published articles on charity law and co-ops and is a known public speaker on these topics. His work includes providing legal, strategic and policy advice and services to a wide range of organizations across Canada. Legal services include incorporation, charitable registration, regulatory compliance issues along with general legal services and issues of structure and planning. He also participates in law reform initiatives and international projects, and is now working with the Fraser Valley Centre for Social Enterprise to develop a completely separate legal structure for social enterprise in Canada, inspired by the UK model.
